I've spent a lot of head time on the question of what leads to success, especially the last 15 years or so. I used to think that success was a great big thing, a tipping point, a moment in time, a destination to arrive at.

I've come to realize (ironically, a little at a time--who knew?), that success DOES take time. A little bit every day. Impatience doesn't get us there, it only creates frustration that we're not there yet. Every time we crest a hill, there's a plateau, followed by a new hill.

The important part is to stop walking forward sometimes, take a breath, and look back down. That moment high on the hill is a perfect way to remind yourself how much you've already transformed after taking a daily step.

Is there a daily habit that you are proud of?

There's sort of a car crash mentality that takes us over sometimes. The adrenaline that comes with drama, the excitement, the way that experience somehow becomes normal.

It's a choice though...we don't have to get drawn in to the drama. We don't always remember, but it's true...we have the power to just keep on walking by.

Drop a YEAH if this resonates with you!

Bellies are still big, grass is green, heels are kicked up…welcome summer! Pretty sure I’ll be flooding your feeds with lamb pictures any day. 😜

PS Local friends, save the date! June 18 is our Lamb Open House event with live music, art & cards for sale, and…lamb snuggling!

Whether you grew up in a farm or ranch family...or if you are a first-generation person figuring it out as you go, chances are there's been someone in your life somewhere who has taken a chance on you.

It could have been a teacher, a boss, a neighbor, a parent. The truth is that we talk about picking ourselves up by our bootstraps, but that's a false narrative. We never truly do *anything* alone. Even the hard things.

Who has helped you along the way?

Have you thought about this? The things we do every day are the habits we've developed. And the habits we've developed say a lot about who we are--at a moment in time.

But don't we get to choose? If we build new habits that are aligned with who we want to be...the type of person we want to be...isn't that a whole lot more about becoming yourself?

Not always an easy path, but ultimately a more fulfilling one.

Super proud and excited to be one of the locations for a statewide research and demonstration project looking at soil health, grazing, and management. Today was soil sampling Day 1. Quite a crew turned out…I’m such a nerd…can’t wait to see the results! Even more excited to see the results four years from now…😜

A few new kids arrived this week. They’ll be spending the summer in the woods right near the parking area to amuse and entertain guests! And clean out some undergrowth, too. 😜

I’ve long been a fan of measurement, but I’ve also often seen how measurement of things drives energy, investment, policy, and attention toward those things. It’s what makes us develop complex policy around single things (carbon or water), and it makes us look at money and profit without quality of life. Quality of life is tough to measure. It can be done—I focused on that in my graduate work—but how do you measure a smile? How do you measure the feeling of calm that comes with being in the right place and doing the right things?

Sometimes the most important things are the least measurable.

I've spent more time than I can count trying to understand success. Defining it, reading about it, designing research around it, actively pursuing it. There are a lot of definitions. This one happens to be my favorite.

Got some news, friends. I’m stepping up my podcast and farmer support services to the next level, with an honest-to-gosh office. I’ve been working from a home office at least three days a week for close to 20 years, with occasional drives to offices 30-60 minutes away. This one is five minutes from home. And I can close the door at the end of the day.

Just like #ranching4profit and #successprinciples encourage, having a dedicated work space helps you focus, get more done, and enjoy your home time more.

Do you work at your kitchen table? How about a hallway, corner space, other spot with no door? It feels like a big step for me #leadingbyexample
