Just as the hogs are headed into their final month before filling some local folks’ freezers, a new batch of kiddos has come to join us. Tonight they are burrowed into some hay in the shed before tomorrow’s crazy rains come. Over the next few months, they’ll grow, become teenagers (trust us, they don’t stay cute...do any teenagers?), and eventually feed even more of our neighbors. I’ve been thinking a lot lately about what an honor it is to feed the people of our Central Vermont community. If the pigs and sheep we raise to have full bellies and in turn fill the bellies of our human community...well, we’re awfully proud to be part of that. Our customers who choose to be connected to—and really understand cycles of life and death—you’re part of that important cycle too. ❤️#foodfamilyandfarm #randolphvt

The ewes are penned in last winter’s pig area to build organic matter and let the tree roots rest. I love that the ewes have a hoop shelter but mostly choose to tuck into the nooks of the tree roots. I think these two were chatting contentedly this morning when I interrupted them! #foodfamilyandfarm #randolphvt #katahdinsheep

Most of my sheep systems are pretty simple and steady, but the annual excitement comes at weaning time (usually there are ear tag upgrades and weighing to go along, although I elected not to weigh this year as I was sorting without a team), and at reintegration time a few weeks later. This morning started in fog and shadow, but by mid day the ewe lambs were happily back with the yearlings and moms, and the ram lambs were taking a truck ride down to meet the big rams. An added bonus was their proximity of grazing pasture to the pigs; we really are a diversified farm and I find it super funny to watch the pigs watching sheep. The sheep, nonplussed as always, went straight for the grass. Naturally. #foodfamilyandfarm #randolphvt #regenerativeagriculture #vermont #vermontbyvermonters #rootedinvermont

Up by the yurt, there’s a bounty of life. I have the ewes at the top grazing on hay to improve the soil, and there’s a family of turkeys hanging about. The sheep love watching the turkeys and the turkeys love digging through sheep pellets. Everybody wins! #foodfamilyandfarm #randolphvt #howlingwolffarmstay

Endings and Beginnings: The Cycles of Life 🌻

Endings and Beginnings: The Cycles of Life 🌻

I've been thinking quite a bit lately about endings, and beginnings. The cycle of summer becoming fall sort of does that to me every year, even though my son is all grown up. Somehow once you're in the habit of the school year, it sticks with you for life.

On any farm, but especially a livestock farm, we think about endings and beginnings a whole lot. Beginnings are easy when new piglets come or lambs are born. They're all cute and perky. Everything feels full of the promise of life and sunny days. We don't necessarily want to think about rain, cold, or what happens at the end of the summer.

When we think about endings, we often feel sad but the truth is that this is a never-ending circle we are describing. The end of one season is the beginning of another vibrant, if different, one. Summer's sunflowers give way to fall's leaf color. The mouse that feeds the fox also feeds the fox's young. The blueberries we were slow in picking this year(!) fed the song birds, who fed the hawks flying over the pastures. The ending of the life of sheep or pigs at our farm means the filling of a freezer for you.

A new friend of the farm found us on the web because of my blog post about not feeling guilty about eating meat. We embrace this cycle of life every day; by being part of our farm, you are part of nature's cycles too. I hope you find it as humbling and awe-inspiring as I do!

What will you do with your new beginning? We hope you share the bounty with your family. We hope you take a meal to a person you care about (especially one who could use some nutrient-dense food!). We hope that you take a few minutes to be grateful that the end of another life can sustain yours. Sure does help the day to start with gratitude and love.

Thank you for being part of our farm--we are grateful to be able to share these cycles with you!

Jenn
