I’m not sure which was was my favorite part of our Art on the Farm day…seeing kids create art, learning about soil properties, watching adults PLAY, or the awesome couple whose kids decided to stay home but made of date of it for themselves anyway!

If you’d asked me five years ago if I’d ever heard of Ranching for Profit, I’d have laughed and said, “no way!”. Frankly, I didn’t think I had anything in common with ranchers, and well…in agriculture we don’t always act from a belief that profit is possible.

Due to the brilliance of RFP Schools and the follow up accountability program Executive Link, I’m not in the same place. I count ranchers as my good friends and we learn from each in new ways every time we meet. I believe livestock agriculture can be profitable, because I’ve seen these tools in action, and their results.

I never dreamed I’d be ready to a summer meeting for my Coast to Coast EL board, but we had just an amazing week together. I love them even more now than I did before. We are moving our businesses forward, growing our dreams, and expanding our horizons, together.

I am a little disappointed no one wore their cowboy hats for the visit, though. ❤️😜

Have you ever fallen in love over a milk bucket? I love this story from Abraham and Ashlyn's podcast interview. <3

I’m Jenn Colby. For more than 25 years, I’ve worked with livestock farmers and ranchers through for-profit, non-profit, Extension, and academic locations. I’ve taught students of all ages, brought farmers together for pasture walks and conferences, and spent lots of time standing by the truck having a good chat afterward. In all these years, I’ve come to have a deep appreciation for the way farmers and ranchers learn from…other farmers and ranchers.

I started the Choosing to Farm podcast to highlight the stories and share experience gained from people all across the country who have chosen to raise livestock. We have low-key, honest conversations about how we’ve gotten here, what it’s like to manage animals, how we run our businesses, and what the path to getting a farm or ranch started really looks like. So far, guests have ranged from Vermont to California, with a wide variety of livestock, sizes and business types represented.

This week I’m hosting my Executive Link board members. Lots to do. Perfect week for a little bale grazing…and sheep I don’t need to move!

On our tour, we’ll look at some places I’ve bale-grazed in past years—they are noticeable!

Learning to take 100% responsibility has been hard
Learning to take 100% responsibility has been hard, but it gets easier. Mistakes are more about learning than failing, and owning our responsibility means we also have to own the things we succeed at (and not just things we do wrong).

Hi, I’m Jenn Colby. I’ve worked professionally in agriculture for more than 25 years. I was on the ground floor of the organic dairy explosion across the Northeast. I created local meals and festivals and farmer’s markets in my Central Vermont community. I led a grazing and livestock program for Extension, offered technical assistance, taught new graziers, created education and outreach events, and represented the voice of graziers near and far.

I want there to be more farmers and ranchers in the world who are whole, healthy, profitable, and managing the land—and their lives—well. I don’t think that managing land well has to mean that we don’t take care of ourselves. I want you to be healthy, and your business to be healthy too. I want that for all of us.

Throughout my career, I’ve helped farmers in all sorts of ways. They’ve told me that bringing in speakers has been life changing for them. I’ve connected them to each other and new opportunities they never knew existed. I’ve sparked new ideas and pushed some boundaries.

To the farmers and ranchers reading this: If you embrace that you are 100% responsible (for the things within your control), you'll find it's a powerful and humbling place to be. <3

Do you live in this reality too? That what worked for our parents and grandparents no longer work for us? How does that show up on your farm or ranch? Do you think it's different whether you're a multi-gen person trying to carry forward the family legacy, or someone breaking new ground as a first-generation farmer/rancher?

Totally stole the bingo idea from a non-farming friend, but filled it with things I've known (or experienced directly). A livestock farmer's life is never boring!

How fast did you get bingo on this? How many lines did you complete?

LOL.

I completely agree with Nacho on this. The systems need to change and return (or jump forward) to something that supports whole, healthy, profitable farmers and ranchers.

System change takes time, though...what can we do today to help ourselves in the mean time?

I certainly have my own ideas, but what do you think?

The way I manage the pastures is aimed at encouraging biodiversity and soil health. It means our pastures are messy and often overgrown. It’s a little like rewilding, it’s a lot like nature (because Nature doesn’t have a tractor either). Since we’ve been here, the biodiversity has jumped like crazy. It also means we’ve got more biting and stinging creatures to go along with more birds, worms, spiders, and snakes. When dragging net fence across the pastures this week, the residents of this hive went on the offensive. OUCH!

I love biodiversity, but sometimes it hurts! 🐝🐝

Dallas said this in our podcast interview, and I just love the reality of it--when you don't know much, you break stuff (and plenty of times, even then). Agriculture is a lot of trial and error and knowledge (information) and wisdom (figuring out when/how to apply that information).

In lots of ways, I wish that I'd followed Dallas' advice on my own farm--the stuff I was breaking was mine!
