We have a steep farm. When I go away on a trip (like I do a few times a year now), I like to give the sheep a nice big paddock for grazing options, plus a backup bale just for kicks.

Usually I drop the bale on the upper side of the farm road after having pulled it out of the truck by a chain attached to a tree (hey, no tractor, I gotta be creative…right? 😜). This time I planned to make the big paddock on the lower side so we’d have water from the spring tile.

Yeah. Life lessons.

I sort of wished I’d gotten my camera out for the slow roll like @rockbottomearl thought to this week. Nope. I’ve just got photos of the carnage. 🤣

At the bottom of the pasture, I thought the big trees might stop it, but it went over and down the ravine, crashing all the way down.

Thankfully, I had a second bale which I tied to the truck before pushing out.

Every day is a learning day on the farm! Fortunately, this was only a $50 mistake. 😜 And I was able to rest easy on my trip because the sheep were all set.

Whether we can—or we can not—is a function of our own brains, or own beliefs. It’s been the most incredible journey to realize how much I’ve held myself back…not because of money or time or ability, but because of my own perceptions of money, time and ability.

Two years ago, I couldn’t imagine leaving my day job. A year ago, I didn’t see myself with a National voice (the podcast wasn’t even a glimmer).

Circumstances didn’t change, my own beliefs did.

What limiting beliefs do you struggle with?

OMG, I feel this. Do you find yourself being *really* good at looking at your goals for the year in January, February, maybe March? And then fencing starts, animals birth, the season gets busy...what goals, right?

Me too, and our brains subconsciously help us achieve the things that we set out to do. How can it do that if we forget?

I'm not getting paid to say this, but that's actually a big reason why I use a paper planner (and I really do like Hyatt's, but use whatever planner works for you). I also have a flip-chart-sized list of my year's goals on my office wall. Because every time I reread the list I go, "Huh. I'm not really working on THAT, am I?" And then I make a call or send an email that starts me toward that goal again.

What goals do YOU have that you need reminders of?

One aspect of creating change in the directions we want to go is identity. If we don't like the identity we see in a certain direction, it's really hard to make choices that move us in that direction. I've seen it lots of times on farms when working with a farmer trying to help them transition to grazing. Do they see themselves climbing off the tractor and walking the pastures to check the plants and soil health? No? Then it's really tough to create that change.

Something we all have in our heads--power to create change--if we want to. If we can see ourselves doing that thing.

Do you think the line from pre-farmer to post-farm
Do you think the line from pre-farmer to post-farmer is a straight one? Sometimes there are zigs and zags. As Ashlyn points out, the zigging and zagging we experience can actually make us better farmers, business people, and I would argue--humans.

I love Cathy Heller's words on this...and she wasn't even talking about the work we do in agriculture, but it resonates SO much. The farmers and ranchers of the world were designed to bloom and thrive too, just like the animals and land and communities that we care for.

What are you doing to help yourself thrive every day? <3
