“From what I’ve learned, it's always best to learn from other people. Learn from people who have been doing this before. If you can find a mentor in the field that you are interested in, I think that's the best thing you can do for yourself. I think it's super important for folks who have the knowledge, to share that knowledge."

Katelyn Duban was born and raised in Southern Alberta, Canada and married into agriculture in 2016. At the time, it was not her intention to be an active member of the farm but she quickly found a passion for the farm life. Katelyn continues to develop her skills as a grain farmer on and off of the field.

As an avid podcast listener, Katelyn found herself searching for a podcast that shared the important roles women in agriculture provide for the industry. When she could not find a podcast that met her criteria she began working on her own podcast. In the spring of 2019 she launched The Rural Woman Podcast.

Since then, Katelyn has shared the stories of incredible women involved in all parts of agriculture from farming, ranching, homesteading, agribusiness and beyond.

Sometimes you’ve got to get creative when you feed round bales and don’t own a tractor. Thankfully, the great folks at @poulinanddaughtersfamilyfarm store and load my hay for me. A really great reminder that we need all types and sizes of farms to create a healthy farm community. ❤️

I still had to shovel snow out of the back of the truck though. 👆🏻

What I didn’t get a shot of? Me backing up fast into the sheep pen so the bale on the end unloaded itself perfectly. I got SKILLS. Sometimes. 🤣🤣

If sharing my story helps someone else, then I'm all in.

At various points in my life, I've looked around to explain why I wasn't in a better situation. I blamed others for how my time was spent, I didn't make enough money, I didn't have a good relationship with family members. I looked outside of me for excuses.

Truthfully, I had stuff to work on. The changes that I've seen in pretty much every aspect of my life and businesses has been as a result of changing ME.

The root of my change has been looking at my own limiting beliefs, naming them, and finding all sorts of ways to let them go.

It's a hard thing (oh--a limiting belief!) to change our own minds, but it's the very closest place to start and the most effective.

What do you have limiting beliefs about?

When Dallas said this in our podcast conversation,
When Dallas said this in our podcast conversation, this hit hard for me. I loved my Extension work. I loved the farmers that I worked with. The challenge is that when you have to help everybody, it's tough to be as effective and make change. When people come to you WANTING to make change, incredible things can happen.

I love highlighting the stories of people who've made changes in their lives. And I love to help people who are really ready to create a better life for themselves, their farm, their ranch.

Some of that help comes in the form of the Choosing to Farm podcast, some comes from the #fivestarfarmstays course, some of it comes from #speaking or #training in person.

Are you ready for a change? How can I help you?

Keeping land open and working is the driving force
Keeping land open and working is the driving force for so many of the farmers and ranchers that I know. At the same time, most only get paid for the products they produce from that land, not the clean air, water, and soil they manage.

What do you think? Should farmers and ranchers get paid for the range of services they offer? If so, how should the public pay for that?

“I really love the sheep. They're not stupid. No
“I really love the sheep. They're not stupid. Nor do I think they desire to die, as I've heard on more than one occasion. I do think they require awareness. They also are so instinct driven--which makes sense, based on what they are--being totally prey-driven. They will do things entirely based on that instinct. If it's fight or flight, I'm flighting first and fighting never.”

Jessica Newman of Southview Station moved back to Pennsylvania to combine her nursing career and love of genetics with a growing Texel sheep operation. She’s had to navigate starting from an open field with no infrastructure, to figuring out roles and relationships with her parents, to balancing off-farm vacation breaks with her non-farming partner.

Super excited to kick off with Season Two! <3
